Voice over IP (VoIP) is an exciting technology that enables voice traffic to be sent over an IP (Internet Protocol) network, eliminating the need to install a standard PSTN (telecom) network. Voice and data convergence refers to sending both voice and data (such as LAN traffic) over any data network.
The hub of the Tangmachu network is a base station installed with two airPoint2 Nexus PRO dual radio access points configured in Bridge mode. They are connected via a switch to the SIP PBX server which is in turn connected to the PSTN lines from Bhutan Telecom. A router is also connected to the switch to provide Internet connectivity.
In Dual Access Point configuration, the airPoint2 Nexus PRO provides as much as 40 Mbps of data throughput and a range of up to 10 miles (16 km). It has an advanced Quality of Service (QoS) and optimized low latency architecture to effectively prioritize traffic for data, voice and video applications.
In the initial pilot stage, 76 homes, one primary school, one monastery and an information center are installed with smart Bridges client devices in a point-to-multipoint configuration in 2.4 GHz unlicensed frequency band and there are plans to fit 22 more homes. The maximum link distances between CPE and AP range from 3.1-3.7 miles (5-6 km).
Shubhendu Banerjee, Technical Director for Samden, described the network: “For residential users, we connected the client devices to an analog telephone via a VoIP Gateway. Whereas for business customers, the CPE is connected to a switch that controls the local office LAN which includes work stations, scanners, printers and faxes as well as phones. In our testing, we found that the low latency and jitter feature of the airPoint2 Nexus PRO allow for high quality voice calls.”
No computer is needed to make calls. A user simply uses an ordinary telephone to dial and place a call. She can also receive calls made from any analogue or IP phones. The VoIP Gateway converts the telephone signal to IP packets so that it can be transmitted over the air.
Ronrig CEO of Samden Tech remarked, “Within a few months of deployment and testing, we are able to provide the whole community with telephone and Internet connectivity. We are very happy with the performance of the smart Bridges access points and client devices.” |
